Plot Synopsis
The 33rd year of the "Showa" era - 1958 - when Tokyo Tower is just about to be completed. On Third Street in Yuhi (literally, 'the evening sun') District, an old residential area of Tokyo, a variety of characters live their daily lives. There's a grocery shop, a variety store, a barber... The street is always filled with laughter and joy. Suzuki Norifumi (Tsutsumi Shin'ichi) owns a small auto body shop named "Suzuki Auto", where he works and lives with his beloved wife Tomoe (Yakushimaru Hiroko) and naughty son Ippei. One day, he comes back home with a new employee, Mutsuko (Horikita Maki). Mutsuko applied for the job and came all the way to Tokyo from her hometown, bringing along a group of 16-year-olds also looking for work. She expected "Suzuki Auto" to be a big corporation, so she's a little disappointed with the small and rather shabby shop in the old district of Tokyo. Another unique resident on Third Street is Chagawa Ryunosuke (Yoshioka Hidetaka), the owner of the candy store across the street from Suzuki Auto. Ryunosuke and Norifumi have known each other since they were kids, and they always argue. Ryunosuke was once a finalist in a famous novel competition, but now he only writes pulp fiction for cheap juvenile magazines, but he manages to earn a living from the writing and his shop. He is secretly in love with new neighbour Hiromi (Koyuki), who opens a small sake bar on the street. One day, Hiromi is asked by her old friend to look after a small boy, Jun'nosuke, who has no place to go. When Ryunosuke gets drunk at her bar, she takes advantage of the situation and convinces him to let the boy stay with him. What will happen to the Suzukis and Mutsuko, who becomes a new family member at their house? And what kind of life will Jun'nosuke and Ryunosuke have? What does the future hold for the residents of Third Street?
